NambuMarket and Cheongnyeon Mall (남부시장&청년몰)

공부로 가득했던 일주일, 학교가 끝난 후 남부시장의 야시장으로 친구들과 맛있는 음식을 먹으러 가기로 했어요.

금요일, 토요일 저녁에만 열리는 야시장의 특징은 맛나고 다양한 음식을 맛볼 수 있다는 것이에요.

입맛이 까다로운 동생부터,고기를 못 먹는 스님까지. 너나 할 것 없이 자기 취향에 맞는 음식을 즐길 수 있어요.

식곤증이 온 후에 사람들을 피하려고2층에 있는 청년몰에서 시윈한 바람을 쐬었어요.

청년들이 운영하는 창의적인 가게들을 보니 굉장히 신선하더라고요.

오후에 한옥마을 구경을 마친 후, 남부시장에 가보는 것은 어떨까요?

Afew streets away from Hanok Village(한옥마을) and Pungnammun (전주 풍남문),you can find Nambu Market (남부시장), one of the most touristicplaces in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do. It is one of the best places to enjoy theevening with some great food and drinks! On a Friday night, Lida, Julia, Axeland I decided to go and see for ourselves why this place was so famous amongKoreans and foreigners. In the end, I got one of nicest experiences that I hadin Korea. It is definitely a Must-Stop if you are in Jeonju!

EveryFriday and Sunday from 7pm to 11pm, this night market opens to visitors. In thefirst floor, you can enjoy three alleys of small kiosks filled with mouthwateringfood and one more of handicrafts. During your visit, you can listen to goodmusic while you are walking and tasting a great variety of Korean andinternational food. The prices are affordable and range from ₩ 3.000 ($2.50) to₩ 10,000 ($9.30). During our visit, we wanted to grab some of the food offeredby this market. We got Korean pork belly with fried kimchi(삼겹살와 김치);pizza bread, cheese-stuffed crab shells, Takoyaki ( 타코야)and Korean sweet pancakes (호떡).

Aftera tour of the market, we headed towards the Cheongnyeon Mall (The Youth mall or“ 청년몰”)on the second floor. This area has a different and youth-inspired style combinedwith urban culture. Going from the traditional market on the first floor toCheongyeon mall was like a breath of fresh air! There are more than 30 charmingstores including various restaurants, coffee shops, small bars, art galleries, handicraftsstores and more. Each of these businesses have their own unique flare, givingyou enough of a reason to go in and check what they offer! On every wall andcorner of this second floor, you can walk and see hand-painted murals andposters with attractive quotes. Cheongnyeon Mall is a gentrificated area that usedto be a storage area for the market below. Nowadays, after undergoingrenovations, it has become an attractive location for visitors while helpingthe local economy. 

Fromyour picky sibling, to your vegetarian monk friend, anybody can find foodsuitable for their tastes! After stuffing yourself with food, how about goingto the Market’s second floor for a breath of fresh air? Here you will find allsorts of creative shops, cafes, and restaurants operated by Jeonju’s youth.After your afternoon Hanok village sightseeing, how about stopping by andgetting a taste of Nambu market?

Jaman Mural Village&Omokdae and Imokdae (전주 자만벽화마을& 오목대와 이목대)

전주하면 전주 한옥마을이 가장 먼저 떠오르시죠?

그러나 전주 한옥마을은 먹거리뿐만 아니라 역사와 현대가 함께 살아 숨쉬는 곳이에요.

쌀쌀한 금요일 아침,친구들이랑 같이 길거리 음식 일대를 거쳐 언덕 위에 있는 오목대랑 자만벽화마을에 가봤어요.

가파른 언덕 위로 보이는 오목대는 태조 이성계가 왜군과의 전투에서 승전을 자축한 곳으로 한 폭의 작품같이 아름다운 한옥마을을 한 눈에 구경할 수 있는 멋진 곳이에요.

그리고 다리를 건너 조금 더 가면 주민들의 창의력이 엿보이는 벽화들이 있는 자만 벽화마을이 있는데

거기서 친구들과 함께 즐겁게 웃으며 재미있는 사진들을 찍었어요.

역사가 살아숨쉬는 유적과 현대인의 독창성을 한 곳에서 구경할 수 있는 한옥마을 여행은 저희들에게 새로운 경험이었어요.

한옥마을을 보면서,전통과 현대가 함께 공존하면서 미래로 나아갈 수 있겠다는 생각이 들었어요.

이번 주말 과거와 현대로의 시간여행을 전주 한옥마을에서 한번 떠나보시는 건 어떨까요?

Welcometo Jeonju’s Hanok Village! Always vibrant and full of life. Besides the famousand flashy streets, there are a few hidden cosy places ~ Let's go up the hillto the Jaman Village(전주 자만벽화마을) to enjoy colorful murals painted onbuildings, houses and walls along the way. On a relaxing Friday morning (tryingto avoid a lot of people), we decided to go to this village and take a look forourselves what it has to offer.  Eventhough, the way up to the village is really steep, the experience was totallyworth it! It is one of the areas in the city which has been through a processof gentrification in the past years. Thanks to this initiative, there a lot oflocal businesses running and contributing to the economy of residents of thisarea.

TheMural village is located just in the other side across the bridge from Omokdae(오목대)and it is next to Imokdae(이목대). Something quite fascinatingis that Omokdae is a monument in honor of Taejo’s first victory againstJapanese invaders. Taejo was the first King of the Joseon Dynasty, one of themost important figures in Korean history. Next to it, there is a small area torelax and enjoy the view of Hanok Village. Imokdae lies just a short walk on abridge from Omokdae. This is a monument where Mokjo (forefather of King Taeho)lived during his childhood. In the end, it was quite exciting to learn a littleabout Korean history!

The village displays hand-drawn murals offamous animated characters, urban art and romantic paintings in every alley(even in the small ones).  Some of them arequite unique and traditional with vibrant colors and other with contemporarystyles; decorating coffee shops and guest houses. They give every visitor,including us, a fascinating impression, catching our attention.

The best part of the village is at the top of ahillside. From there, while enjoying a cup of coffee and reading a book in thecafé at top, you could enjoy a lovely view over Hanok Village and the surroundingmountains. This is one of our favorite places!

We highly recommend this place for its culturaland recreational value. It’s the perfect place to finish your day-visit to HanokVillage and just wander around various murals! Not to mention that, the outdoorgallery of traditional and contemporary art is free!
