Introduction

Built in 1388 by then provincial governor Choi Yu Gyung, Pungnammun is the only remaining gate after their demolition in 1597. Pungnammun was completely restored when reconstruction began in 1978, after the structure was partially destroyed during the Japanese invasion of 1592-1598. It is also the battlefield where the Donghak peasant army faced the royal forces in 1894. The gate was designated as National Treasure no. 308 on January 21st, 1963.
