Introduction

Jeonju Hyanggyo is the equivalent to a modern middle school. After its initial establishment in 1354, it was relocated to its current location in 1603. Jeonju Haynggyo was famous for its huge size. It consists of: Daesungjeon which has 3 rooms, dongmu, seomu, shinmun, waemun, manhwaroo, each of which has 10 rooms, and myungryundang which has 5 rooms; dongjae and seojae, each of which has 6 rooms; gyesungsa, shinmun, yipdukmun, each of which has 3 rooms; samajae which has 4 rooms; yangsajae which has 6 rooms;chekpango which has 2 rooms; a staff room; jaegigo; sooboksil and more. In total it has 99 rooms. Manhwaroo, one of the locations, disappeared in a flood in 1886, chekpango was almost destroyed during another flood in 1920 and during the Korean War in 1950. In the center of Daesungjeon, there are memorial tablets of the five saints including Confucius and Mencius as well as a tablet of the six wise men of the Song Dynasty, and also tablets of the eighteen wise men of Korea. While most of educational institutions of this type are located on hills so that Daesungjeon sits in the rear part, Jeonju Hyanggyo is located on flat land so its Daesungjeon sits in the front part. Jeonju Hyanggyo has been repaired for damages and was designated as the 379th historical site of the country in 1992.
